Welcome
We at Creative Hobbies are dedicated to helping anyone interested in starting their own
ceramic business. Whether you want to open a traditional shop or a contemporary shop we
have literature available to help pave the way to potential success.
The increasing awareness of
the growth of home-based businesses, fueled by computer/communication link improvements,
is providing the social acceptance that allows us to admit that over 90% of our wholesale
customers operate home-based ceramics businesses. |
Erma
Duncan, founder of Duncan, is the perfect example. Her kitchen workroom
turned into a garage studio, then to a storefront, and eventually became the
international, multimillion dollar operation known today as Duncan Enterprises. Erma's
love of ceramics and creativity, combined with her sons' good planning and hard work, were
the reason for this success - a family uniting activity interest. |

Traditionally a ceramic studios'
main objective has been to fulfill creativity needs by providing a "how to"
social teaching activity, in addition to providing finished products and wholesale ware.
This highly vertically integrated approach may encompass all phases of a ceramic activity
including casting greenware from molds, cleaning and firing greenware into ceramic bisque,
as well as teaching, wholesaling - retailing, and finished products. Although a
comprehensive studio can grow into a large investment of education, money, and effort, it
is easy to begin small and grow into a much bigger and worthwhile result.

More contemporary Studios are
breaking the paradigm of the traditional comprehensive studio by identifying a specific
market or need and tailoring their activity only at that specific target. In addition to
how this specialization would understandably result in the finished products area, an
example are the "coffee shop" decor style studios being opened in areas more
affluent in spare time with a "quick and easy creativity" approach, dedicating
their full effort on the retail floor and not being involved in the whole spectrum
including manufacturing greenware and ceramic bisque.
